I had an interesting conversation tonight. I’ve had several with this fellow, over the last year or so, that have been similar. He seems to really want to do good.. but keeps slipping into sin. One thing I learned from PD and then have seen it work practically in my own life is this; if there is something that I’m struggling with, the worst thing I can do is focus on that problem and trying to stop doing whatever it is I’m doing. Instead, when I make a positive movement towards serving the Lord my focus is taken away from that issue and put on Jesus, and His grace. A while back when we did our study of Colossians, a passage in chapter 2 really drove this home for me.

Colossians 2:20-23(NKJV)
Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

This passage is basically saying don’t try to live by a bunch of stupid self imposed rules of conduct, because they “are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh”. The way to not sin, is to be actively serving the Lord. For instance if you struggle with lust, when you see a beautiful person of the opposite sex, pray for their salvation or that the Lord will draw them closer to Himself. It may not be impossible, but it is almost impossible to honestly pray that and sin at the same time.

Lord Bless you!!
